My philosophy for teaching golf is very simple "I will watch you hit some balls, I will then tell you what to do and then you will play better and have more fun".

I believe there is no such thing as playing golf for fun it is a very frustrating and difficult sport to play to one's satisfaction.  Playing golf is only fun when you play to your own self-satisfaction, so the better you play the more fun you will have.  The secret to golf for the beginner and average club golfer is to educate their hands with soft wrists and use them correctly, after all they are the only contact your body has with the golf club and if you can grip the golf club nicely it will be easier to educate and use your hands.

All the other parts of your body are initially irrelevant and this is very simple and common sense when you think about it.  However, this is very rarely mentioned on television because all the top players you are watching have educated hands because you cannot play golf without them.

The three most common faults the handicapped golfer has are that they have never learnt to hold the club nicely, they have never learnt to aim and set up consistently and their hands are uneducated.  Gripping the golf club, aiming at your target and setting up is not something you can practice because it is not a movement, it is something you just have to do every time before you hit a ball and discipline which is the most underused word in golf plays a huge part in achieving this.

I have never seen a good player with a bad grip and I have never seen a bad player with a good grip, so learn to grip the golf club correctly.  If you can then learn to aim and set up correctly and consistently golf will become easier and you can start to concentrate on using and educating your hands.  If you do not aim and set up to the ball consistently it is impossible to play golf consistently, therefore a pre-shot routine to help you achieve this is vital to playing consistent golf.

Once you can do this you will then find it easier and faster to progress further onto the finer points of the golf swing such as the 4 swing planes, the clubface, turning, body movement and weight transference.

If you want to have fun by learning to play golf or improving your golf, firstly ask yourself the question “HOW MUCH DISCIPLINE DO I HAVE” otherwise you could be in for a very frustrating experience.
